Solidarity in the townships - Emergency aid for xenophobia victims in South Africa
In May 2008 a wave of xenophobic violence swept across South Africa. Nonetheless, thousands of South Africans rallied in solidarity with the victims, who were mainly from neighbouring countries. Activists from Medico’s partner organisations were in the thick of it. Medico donated 10,000 Euros from its emergency relief fund to help victims attacked or driven out of South African townships. Meanwhile, Medico’s partner in South Africa, Zimbabwe Exiles Forum (ZEF), struggled to ensure medical and psychosocial care for refugees in Johannesburg. With the help of Medico funding, displaced people were given blankets, food and clothing.
